Liv Golf Boston opening round Friday September 2nd 2022. This was my first experience of Liv Golf and the new golf is loud fan experience. The following is a breakdown of my experience of the day with as much information on the various aspects of the day.

The travel to the course was very simple as it was located very centrally to many locations. I had booked my stay at the Extended stay America - Marlborough. This meant I had about a 20 mins taxi / uber to get to the course. I managed to find a few other people at the hotel who were also heading to the course that morning so managed to split the cost which always helps.

The drop off point was well located near the entrance gate which made it easy to find our way through security and into the course.

As is fairly standard for events nowadays there was a bag check prior to entry and only certain size see through bags had been allowed. (for exact requirements for LIV golf events please see the various events specific requirements)

This was a very straight forward process. You just go onto the Liv Golf website, then select the event you wish to attend, the type of ticket you require and purchase your tickets.

There are 3 main types of tickets

- Ground pass which gives you access to the course and all general concessions and events happening.

- Gallery Club offers fans an exclusive area with great views over the course and views of the fanzone. Offering a vibrant atmosphere, quick bites and unlimited beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages.

- CLUB 54 provides an exclusive ultra-premium experience for fans looking for the best of the best. Each event differs slightly so check your event for exact details on what is offered.

I found the price of the tickets for this event very reasonable - I paid $39 US for the ticket as they had an offer on when I purchased for the single day ground pass, and for a top level event I thought was great value.

This course was absolutely stunning and was a great backdrop to the event.

Walking around this course was a joy and was great to see a good variety of holes and challenges faced for the players. The setup of facilities provided such as food, drink and washrooms was really well laid out for the spectators to help with the experience.

It was amazing to see some of the biggest names in golf competed at The Oaks Golf Course including  Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson. I was also very lucky that Cameron Smith, following his victory at the 2022 Open Championship, made his LIV Golf debut in Boston, which was great to see on form probably the best golfer in the world at that time.

Dustin Johnson took home the individual trophy at LIV Golf Invitational Boston. Johnson’s 60-foot eagle putt was the difference in a playoff win over Anirban Lahiri and Joaquin Niemann, who each made their LIV Golf debut at the event. With the win, Johnson vaulted to the top of the individual season-long point standings and eventually won the Individual Champion title.

A special mention must go to Matthew Wolff on getting the first hole in one on LIV golf tour, standing next to the tee and watching the shot go in and the reaction was amazing.

They had several areas allocated for food for the general ticket holders, with a range of options to cater to most peoples tastes. Offers included various grab and go areas with sandwiches, chips and granola bars etc...

Also available were hot food options with some seating to enjoy the food and still watch the course and golf go on. These included burgers, hot dogs, pizza so a fairly standard offering at sporting events. I'm sure there may of been other options but I did not manage to eat at every stall or see what every offering that was available.

The food was a very good standard for this kind of event and the staff and workers could never do too much for you and answered any questions I saw people asking.

The drink offerings again seemed to be fairly typical for a sports event, so local beers, big name brands, a few spritzer drinks, wine and soft drinks. These were available at lots of locations throughout the event.

One thing I found very reasonable at this event was the drinks prices as a beer was approximately $8 USD for a 25oz can. (I say approx. as I think due to a few teething problems as was a very early LIV event the price varied as the POS system seemed to not of been setup for all the products available and some staff put the order through as different things) But from what I could work out I think I actually got charged less on average than the price should of been so worked out well for me.

This is one of the main things about LIV golf that I was most interested in as they definitely have a different approach to the golf experience to traditional golf events. Having music playing in the background on most tees, having a fully setup DJ station with very loud music playing in the middle of 4 golf holes was a new experience but I personally loved it. It created a great atmosphere and I also feel like it enabled the players to seem a bit more relaxed and connect a bit better with the spectators. With LIV golf being a shotgun start it also means that they have a much easier way of putting entertainment on after the golf as everyone will finish at the same time near enough. The fanzone with various performing acts on through the evening was a real treat to end the day of watching golf.

Also provided was few mini golf challenges, chipping competition, long putting challenge etc... which also offers something for kids and adults alike just to get more involved.

Prior to the shotgun start tee-off we also got to witness the Frog-X Navy SEAL parachute team perform and land on the first fairway, this was again just another extra bonus to make the day a little bit more memorable, the fact Greg Norman parachuted in with them was a massive surprise and definitely got the crowd a bit more excited before the tee-off.

This was an amazing golf course and the whole event to me worked incredibly well all around. I have played golf for over 30 years and getting to see the players so up close and on such a great course was amazing. The extra little things that LIV golf brings to the table such as the music I feel just helps to make the whole event seem much more relaxed for both players and spectator alike.

I feel there will always be room in golf for the more traditional side of the game but at the same time LIV golf is bringing a whole new idea to the table and I feel is helping to bring a different kind of spectator to the game of golf and that can only be a good thing going forward.

With a bit more time and the more events that LIV golf can do, they will finesse an already good product and the experience will only get better.

I would highly recommend anybody who is a fan of live sport to give LIV golf a go if they get the chance and especially if you are a golf fan as it brings something different to the party.

Overall event score 4 / 5
